Tweener is the name of our old 20 foot Procraft pontoon boat. Here I am fishing at Lake Pleasant in Arizona. A little weather was coming in and the lake got very choppy. Hard winds started blowing cold rain at me and I had to seek shelter in a cove. I didn’t catch anything, but my wife drove out to the lake later and we spent the night on the boat.

The Alpine CDA-105 CD receiver with iPod controller. I just purchased one of these bad boys from Crutchfield electronics. I am going to replace the Kenwood CD player that is currently on my boat with this one. It is nice because the Kenwood is just a CD player.. out at the lake stereo reception sucks so I am limited to the music on CDs. Yes, the Kenwood on my boat right now plays mp3 CDs, but that isn’t good enough. I need an iPod controller so that I can access my iPod Classic 160GB, which has thousands of songs on it.

Check it out:

General features:

CD receiver with built-in amplifier (18 watts RMS CEA-2006/50 peak x 4 channels)

plays CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RW discs, including discs loaded with MP3, WMA, and AAC music files

fold-down, detachable face

optional remote control

Well, money is an issue so here is the game plan. First, before I forget, check out this pontoon enclosure manufacturer. I will definitely be talking to them when I get ready to put a top on the new boat.

I have my current boat, which will also serve as a donor boat, in a rental spot, and will probably keep it there. I will use the RV gate area on our new house as the area that I eventually build the new boat at. It will be built on the ground, so that it stays low enough not to piss off the neighbors. I will buy one of the lift trailers for it so that I can keep the boat low once it is finished. I know that they aren’t as stable, which sucks, but you do what you’ve got to do, right?

Right now I own a 20 foot ProCraft pontoon boat. When the weather was warm we were taking it out every weekend to the lake. Pontoon boats are great because they have a flat floor and furniture. Most of them aren’t very fast, and so you can think of them as a studio apartment on the water, or a floating living room One of my buddies has a wife who hated boats, and we finally got her out on the water for a friends and family trip, and she really enjoyed it.

I would love to build my own pontoon boat. I have always enjoyed tinkering with things, and I have an idea about what I would like to see on my home build. My plan is to slowly replace all of the things that are falling apart or wearing out on my boat with parts that I want for my new boat. You see, for the most part pontoon boat parts are interchangeable so when I finally get ready to build up on a 26 foot boat platform I should be able to move the furniture and electronics off my old boat.

Some challenges: The gate layout and steering system. My current pontoon boat uses a gate that shortens up quite a bit so that you can fish off the front and back. My new gate won’t do that because there will be fishing platforms. By the way, the image above is what my project boat should look like when it is finished. Also, my project pontoon boat will have two outboard motors and so I will have the added expense of another motor that will have to happen at the same time as the 26′ boat. And the steering system will be hydraulic.

Well, more to come later. Please stay tuned and feel free to let me know what you think.
